I'm a little weak in this routing business. I share an internet connection, but we both run XP and are using a lan network, not a router. The only documentation I could find mentioned looking in network connections->protocols->tcp/ip->(rightclick)properties->router properties
thanks for the help i actually found out how to host with the router i'm usin witch is the linksys router i needed to put my ip address in the dns file witch puts your ip out front of the firewall built into the router..alowing you too host
If you are given a static IP (sometimes called a Public IP address) for your router, you can do it this way:
In a Linksys, fill in the WAN Connection Type IP with your static IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server IPs as assigned by your ISP. I usually leave the LAN IP on default. You may or may not have to put in a Host name and a domain name-- if your router works without it, obviously you don't.
Then I go to Advanced, and click on the DMZ tab. There I put in the LAN IP of my server (or my computer if I don't have a dedicated server). If you leave the DHCP setting at default, it will usually be something like 192.168.1.100. Hit Apply.
One way you can find the IP of your computers is by going to a command line window and typing in ipconfig.
I set the LAN IP of my server static, so it will always be the same. You can do the same thing with your computer. Then you can set up the Port Forwarding (Forwarding Tab) for DirectX, DFLW, DFBHD, Roger Wilco, etc to always go to the server (or your computer).
If you use DHCP, it is possible to have your server get assigned a different LAN IP if you boot it up before or after your other computers, thus making the port forwarding settings null. If you set the server LAN IP static in the network config settings (TCP/IP) one or two numbers lower than the beginning DHCP assigned number in the router (default is 192.168.1.100) i.e. 192.168.1.98, it will never change, and it will still work. Any other computer set to Obtain IP Address Automatically will not get assigned the server's LAN IP address even if the server is turned off.
I run Zone Alarm and McAfee Antivirus on my server, which is running XP, neither of which seem to effect game play. The first time someone joins, you may have to tweak ZA for some players, maybe adding their router IP so it will be allowed, etc.
