I like the "original computer" too, got a kick out of it. on a serious note though, I hope we dont get to the point that we dont remember what that was. when i was in school you got in trouble if you were caught with a calculator in math class. now my daughter is in high school and required to have a $100 calculator( certain brand name only) and she gets good grades but i dont know how much she could really do without the calculator. The kids can hit a few keys and tell you how long it would take my dog to get to the end of the universe,but anything else? the kids that dont go to college end up coming to work for me in construction and they dont have a clue how to read a tape measure. you say cut a 2x4 36 and 13/16 and they have a blank look on their face. and that is a shame.
I guess I'm rambling on so I'll quit now! Charger- I laugh like hell evertime I see your new signature ! ( good to be able to see a little humour in a situation that truly is sad!)

I just saw your post monkeydog , It's true a college education is a big help finding work out there these days , but I've also had some "college graduates" that worked where I used to, and had 6 to 8 years of college under their belts , and they will give you that same blank look on their face when asked the same question. I think some of these younger adults of today need to go back to that "original computer" for awhile. It seems so many of them are skipping the basic necessities of life. My two kids are both in college now and it scares me some of the stuff they have learned , but on the other hand it scares me what they haven't learned also..

sometimes I wish i could take my kids back in time and show them the party-line telephone we had, and let them mow the grass with that old push mower that i would have to get a running start if the grass was high. (I think we were the last ones in town to get a mower with an engine on top!)
I guess we can just try to guide ours along and hope they retain the goodstuff. Amazing how fast the world is going, and how strong those winds of change are.

There is much truth in what is being discussed here about losing the basics. Try handing a young cashier an odd amount of change after they've already gotten the printout on the register.

I'm curious monkeydog - I remember 'party-lines' from when I was a kid - but we always had a 'modern' mower. Are you a 1950's child ? You don't have to answer... I'm just curious.

actually Blue, I was born in the 60's, so my formulative years extended up into the 70's. The area of colorado that I grew up in still had party lines up into the 80's unless you were in the city where phones were modern. I guess the reason I got my childhood workouts with that dull pushmower was the money issue(or the lack there of). My mother provided us with the necessities and took good care of us, but there was no money around for the extras. Got my first bicycle at 8 and it was a girls bike that grampa got second hand. got in a lot of fights and whipped some other boys arses over that bike but I loved it!
well, I'm rambling again! ( did you ever get to weed eat the yard with those old hand clippers? dreaded those!)

Ok, I understand now. We had the party-line in rural Georgia in the mid 70's. And yes, I used those hand sheers to trim the yard - until dad went 'hi tech' cordless.

Yep , my dad went into that cordless age in style too , same shears Blue.lol.
He even went real hi-tech with the electric mower , man o man did I chop the heck out of that cord. I think he took some stock in electrical tape when I started mowing with that...

I see there is a big difference between cordless, and hi tech cordless. And 5inches or more of wet grass with a push mower was sure fun for a young kid that didn't weigh more than the mower.
btw I did walk up hill both ways to & from school also.

Hey guys, I use one of the push mowers your talking about. It helps (some) to keep me fit, no gas or oil. Also have a set of the non electric sheers. Just to keep the hands in shape. But I will admit to having broken down and gotten an electric hedge trimmer, until I cut the cord the third time I used it. Good old electrical tape (and just in case, I keep the old hand operated ones around also). I'm a 50's kid and did have the party line (at our next door neighbors). I watched the small round almost square b/w TV at my friends house or on the curb at the local Zenith Television and Stereo store. My daughters were made to use a pen and paper at home for math work and writing essays, until high school. But all in all, I look back at doing all that and helping our down the street neighbor build that underground bomb shelter as the good times. Guess our kids will laugh about those old PC's they use to have and remember the smell of gasoline also. I had a bike (put together myself from parts found at the junk yard) so I wouldn't have to walk up hill both ways in the snow like Avenger up there. haha Good memories all of them.

LOL I remember my first bike. It was purple with one of the big banana seats. And had the almost chopper style handle bars on it. I think it was a Huffy. LOL I got it about the same time my mom was learning to drive. Never figured out why she waited till she was almost 30 to get her license.

RAB, That was called a "Stingray " bike and it was made by Schwinn. They were neat especially if you put cards to flap the spokes for motorcycle sound and a tall metal staff flag so they could see you coming above cars tops. They are making a retro something similar to those stingers now, because they were so popular back in the day. Here's the Original Stingray!

Oh and back when i had a bike like that. All girls had coodies. No mormal boy wanted to hang out with them.
