Whenever I try to play this great game online, my ping messes with me.
It usually sits around 3000 which i know isnt standard (far off it too). Sometimes it decided it likes 30,000 or even 60,000!
Please help me sort this problem. I am using an HP pavillion zv5000 laptop with a 54g belkin wireless network card.
ever tried to conect it to the internet and router with a CAT5 twisted pair cable?
im wondering what ping you then would have.
are there running any firewalls? either built in the hardware (router) or software on the laptop.
No. I dont use firewalls when im connecting to a game.
finding where the problem is would help - ie. a) between your modem and the internet b) between your modem and router, c) between your router and your computer (the wireless connection), or d) your computer.
when you get a high ping, try pinging your router (default internal router ip would normally be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2, o/w consult your manual). if you get a high ping there, that could be your problem, and could indicate several types of problems, most likely interference or too much distance between you and the transmitter.
otherwise, do a traceroute to the server or to novaworld and that will tell you where the latency is going down the toilet. go to command line and type tracert 65.214.130.54 to run a trace to nova's come and get it server. If all you get is "timed out", you need to adjust firewall settings so you will see results - those settings include icmp allow echo, timestamp, bad parameter for datagram, etc. This command pings each hop (each server or router) that your connection goes to all the way back to the host's ip you entered, so you will see a list of pings. the pings that show big differences are the overworked/damaged servers that are causing the problem. If the tracert shows no such jumps, or only shows it at the last hop to your computer, then the problem is either your ISP or your network/lan/computer.

Id say check for adware/spyware. I had a time when all my pingtimes had doubled if not more. I rad AdAware and 1 piece of adware called Bargin Buddy. Once it was gone my ping times went back to normal. There are some spyware programs that send a constant stream om data back to who ever. I fyou have one that does that it can cause all kind of problems with you conection.
