What you are describing is called a 'browser hijacker'. Though it likely contains spyware it is something that burrows into the registry settings for your browser - adding new buttons, toolbars and shortcuts you 'can't live without' - as well as redirecting your homepage. Some of the programs refuse to die and are somewhat vicious, so what I'm getting ready to suggest is a last resort and can cause some momentary damage to your programs - requiring the reinstall of a favorite toolbar - but nothing major in my experience.

First things first. If you have a system that runs system restore - turn it off. Find your system restore folder and remove all of the system restore folders. Empty your Recycle Bin and Empty Norton's Protected files.

Adaware dropped 6.0 a while back. Go to Lavasoft and get Ad-Aware SE - v1.05. Install and update your definition. Run and delete the entries found.

Now go get Hijack This !. ( This one is the 'dangerous program' - and will remove any page you set as the homepage and the buttons. It will also remove any proxy server settings - so if you connect by a network connection - save the ip) Put that in a folder on your desktop and run it. Scan and Fix until everthing that will be removed is removed. Delete the backups it makes into the folder.

Reboot. Turn system restore back on. Create a restore point. Go to Accessories -> System Utilities -> Disk Cleaner -> More Options and -- remove all but the last restore point. Open your browser, reset your homepage.

Sometimes these files will not be removed by the programs alone or require that you reboot and rerun them. But this should take care of the biggest problems. Hope that helps

I use two programs which are free downloads, if your interested. For spyware I use "Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3" and for the registry I use "TweakNow RegCleaner". Both of these have helped me alot and surprised me in what all they found wrong. The search & destroy program also has a very good windows start up tool when running in advanced mode. Of course you use it at your own risk, but out of the 4 pc's i've used it on I had only good results. The last pc I worked on had 396 spyware problems and 53 registry problems (which when corrected it now runs like a pentium 4 should and hasn't had anymore blue screens with error messages).
