Unhappy Sysdump error in C4 - pls help!

Hello friends. I had to re-install Windows 98SE on my PC. Now when I try to run Comanche 4 I get an error window saying:

    ________________

    SYSDUMP.TXT saved

I close that window and then get another window saying "C4 has performed an illegal operation". The details:

not sure what the problem is but you might try whatever applies:

    1) make sure latest mobo drivers installed (download from vendor) (especially vgart)

2)make sure latest video drivers installed (vendor)

    3)reinstall comanche, run the update

4)download v1.5 fixed from checkpointdelta and use (without cd)
(make sure you put startup.htm in comanche directory)

    hope this helps

This is just a suggestion or a thought about Windows98SE and DirectX 9b. I use to run Windows98SE and had problems with it using DirectX9b on some of my games, which I understand is geared more for XP but does work on most machines regardless. I actually had to revert back to DirectX8.x in order to run some of my games. Off the top of my head I seem to remember C4 being one of them. If you find your still having problems even after WiperSix suggestion, which is a good one, then consider the DirectX theory.

But please let us know either way.

    Yea

Still working on it but I did come across the DirectX issue Charger.

The Comanche 4 CD came with DirectX 8 on it. After I installed the game, the installer suggested I install DirextX 8 as well, so I did.

The game would not even load. When you double-clicked the C4 icon the "Illegal Operation" window popped up. I reinstalled C4 but was still getting the same error.

I decided to get hold of DirectX 9.0b and so I installed that.

As u can see from this thread the game still will not load up but at least it *attempts* a load (ie. the splash screen appears etc etc) and then I get the errors mentioned in the first post.

So it looks like in my case Comanche 4 liked DirectX 9.0b!

Incidentally some other programs on my comp also dont run and they involve errors with a system file called "kernel32.dll"

Now Comanche 4 doesnt show that in its error windows but maybe thats got something to do with it...

WIll keep u guys updated and thanx a lot for ure ongoing help

Part of the problem with installing DirectX 8 over 9 is that it won't remove DirectX 9. You could check http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx and see if there’s a remover for 9b so you are able to install 8 in its place.

As I said before Windows98SE seems more stable with DirectX8 so in this case this might be where your particular problem lies.

When I had the DX issue I literally had to reformat my HD in order to start it fresh and install DX8 but that was a while ago and I’m sure by now there’s a fix for it.

I’m not suggesting you reformat your computer because it may or may not fix your problem, but in this case I’m predicting that with your other programs having issues with “kernel32.dll” that reformatting and staying with the DX8 might solve some of your problems. If you’re not familiar with reformatting and have no way to back up your data files then this is not something you should attempt.

    Plodding along...

Still no luck chaps...but Im trying!

Hey thanx for that link Wildman, I shall check it out 4 sure

Thats interesting, I didnt know that. Thanx, I shall go to the Micorsoft link and see if it can be sorted. Hopefully they will have a remover.

I was always under the impression that the latest version of Direct X would make any computer happy but I guess with older PC's & older OS's - older version of Direct X will do.

    More later....& TY
