Well.......
I would not consider this site to be something that children should be "protected" from. When things get out of hand, the staff takes care of it.
1. If there are too many "wierdos" on this site then why are you here? Do you like to "chat" with wierd and strange people? Hell I do. And if I had children I would see no issues with letting them visit this site. I don't know everyone here but I do read the posts and I feel that all the content is suitable for children.
2. Point me to a post that is too extreme for children to view. If you have problems with the posts then tell a staff member. We trust them to take care of these thing. And so far they are doing a great job.
Just my thoughts.

Hmmm...i think the whole thing is maturity and how well a child can differentiate between fantasy and reality. In some cases a 9 year old may handle a violent game/movie better than a 15 year old.
