Ok folks ..........i'm thinking on buying a new pc for me .....tired of the kids screwing up this thing...........so the question is without spending my retirement money what should my new Pc be equiped with ie processer :video card sound card and so on so i will have the capacity that i require for personal use and gaming
Funny you should mention this as I was just looking around for one myself...
I was waiting on the 64bit FX to drop in price before buying one... but apparently AMD is bent on raking in the cash until Intel offers an their alternative, the Pentium V- or Tejas .
The Pentium V is being reported to offer at between 5GHz to 7GHz speeds, have 2MB plus of level two cache, be built on a 90 nanometer process, and have a stackable design...with a module sitting on top to provide 64-bit extension capability. I can't even be sure that this is more than rumor... but can you imagine a 7 GHZ computer..? I remember when the 286 replaced the 8086 -and was THE BOMB.
Anyway....64 Bit windows is due out this year... but other 64bit software is probably a long ways off..so you'd probably be ok with a 32bit processor for awhile..
anything else, I haven't looked into...
Well my sugestion is...if the computer you have now is worth upgrading do that and buy the kids some cheap HP from Wal Mart...:grin:
Hutch, what are your current comp specs now, and how much money do you THINK you want to spend on building a new machine ?

Hutch for what its worth, Ill build you a custom computer for about 800 dollars. 2700 processor, 9600pro video card, 1201 g hard drive, 1 g kingston ram, and I have had great success with the Asus motherboard. We play all delta force games, Nascar racing, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Railroad tycoon 3, etc. and have had no problems with it. email me for details if interested.

Holy crapoli Batman, you would get snookered. Well if you want let me know and I can give you all the data and you could assemble it by yourself. I'm not a computer geek, actually a mechanic by trade. HEH. So I do end up with extra bolts when done but have built 7 in the last year and they work.
well what i have now is a HP pallivion 1.2 gig athloen prosessor 386 ram nidiva tnt 64 video card.........
If i knew what the mother board was i would think that I could replace the processor and run 512 ram ......but not knowing that....i wouldn't want to fry the mother board......upgradeing would be a lot easier than than replacing the hold system.........right?
Hp has a great computer but a little to exclusive for me. I would say if the issue were only speed, you could upgrade the processor to a 1.8, and and more ram. I didnt notice if the video card was a problem. We run 128's & I just completed a 286 so not sure whether the cost is going to help you, by simply upgrading. If you can follow simple instructions and have access to U.S. internet companies, I can direct you to 3 real good 1s that have good service and good prices. They are simple to put together and Im a freakin loser when it comes to computer geekdom. LOL. Im not up on the whole crossing the border thing so you will have to excuse me. I could also give you what we run here and that would help you shopping for 1. Again down here in the states its pretty easy to build up what you want. We build all ours to compete with Alien ware. Hopefully this helps. If not I will bow to superior comp geek knowledge.
I prefer the Intel CPU's but these days both AMD and Intel are about the same.
If you go the intel route get the Abit IC7-MAX3 motherboard with some top quality PC3500 Ram.. most awesome purchase I ever made.. the MAX3 allows for supurb overclocking.
