…... a new pilot. Bang! dead.
I know many of you veterans fly with an alias for one reason or another, one of which is to be able to fly without being bombarded by questions (Heaven knows I've pestered you with my share of questions). I won’t venture guesses as to the other reasons; not the point.
Occasionally, I encounter a pilot flying with the call sign of Griffon (default name), hold back, and do what I can to help this apparent newbee (same goes for others that are struggling and dying constantly). This starts with asking them to choose a new name so the gang will get to know them and visa versa. Then, it's game settings, such as sound, and I steer them here or a few other places for additional tips. Bottom line is that without a steady influx of new pilots, this very fine multiplayer air combat game will die and that will suck.
But also occasionally, I'll see a Griffon, hold fire, and get blown to bits, and then again, and again, because it's a vet flying as Griffon. When experienced pilots fly as Griffon, it makes it more unlikely that someone will hold back and/or help because they'll think it might be a vet and let stingers fly. In some cases, for new Griffons, I've seen them type "Sucks, too hard" and leave to never return. New blood, lost.
There are, unfortunately, pilots that do not care about newbees; blast them with glee and feel superior for it, but there are also pilots that do care. If you decide to fly with an alias (and most of us have/do), please consider something other than Griffon.
BTW – this is not targeted at those that simply have the word 'griffon' along with other text somewhere in their call sign; that's not confusing at all.
Bonefish; off his soapbox, and out
