I loaded Comanche 4 in WinXp Service Pack 1, updated the game, then tried to
play the game. It wouldn't load up. the hourglass appeared and then disappeared,
then nothing. I called Nova tech support (which wasn't so grand, sorry:) and they
sent me a file called bink.exe and told me to swap it in the root for the old bink.
I did this and the game loaded, went through the intro, then to the main menu. At this point the single mission option was shadowed, or ghosted out, and I couldn't get into single player missions, nor could I play a multiplayer game.

I then updated to Servicepack2 (Tech supports idea, not mine!) and the game still wouldn't work. Could someone with experience please help me out? I've been
waiting to play Comanche 4 for quite a while, I'm really bummed out that I can't get the game to run.

Thank you,
Lazarus.

When the single and multi player options are greyed out it is usually from not having the CD in the drive. If that isn't the problem you might try the NO CD patch which can be found in the download section of this site. Hope that helps you out.

The CD is in the drive. Only the single player is greyed out. The fix didn't work.
Would you know of any other ways to fix this problem? Thanks for responding
I appreciate it.

Have you tried uninstalling, then reinstalling? Also I've found that the "Large Install" option seems to work the best. And one other problem I had was with my Logitech joystick, it caused the game to crash every time it loaded. The way it was fixed wa simpily changing USB ports.

Yes, I've uninstalled, reinstalled, I've done the large install. I've reinstalled over the first installation, used new drivers ect. I hope someone out there can help me with this problem. Thanks for the advice. I doubt my joystick is the problem. The
game is not crashing, it just won't let me get into the single player missions. How would I go about playing a multiplayer game? I've tried to look for other games but nothing seems to happen. It wouldn't be so bad if I could play with some other people over the net. Any suggestions?

First you should give your pc specs.

Next you have to do a clean uninstal. That means after you do the uninstal you need to deleate the C4 folder and all files it contains before you instal again. Do not instal with out deleating that folder.

Greyed out boxes most times do mean either the cd is not in the drive or it is in the wrong drive. You realy should test it with the fixed exe. The problem could also be a damaged cd. Are there any scrathes on it ?.

System Specs:

Windows Xp Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
512 megs of RAM
GeForce MX 4000 128mb
Creative Labs SB USB Audio

I did a clean install, I deleted everything and didn't leave a trace. I have a registry checker to fix and errors after the delete. My CD is in excellent condition
and I have it in the same drive I installed the game on. I'v downloaded the fixer and the updates, switched the old Bink.exe with a new one the Nova tech guy sent me in the email. Still no beans...what do you think I can try?

You shouldn't need another blink.exe, Your specs are ok.

Your next option is to do a second instal on a new area of your hard drive. Don't even bother uninstalling the old one for now. Also take a look at the game version text file in your C4 folder and see what game version it is. If it's version 2 you shouldn't update. By fixer do you mean the fixed exe file ?.
If so when you instal it follow these steps. Deleate the old exe. I have had issues renaming it. To instal it, unzip it into the c4 folder. Do not copy and paste it or try and drag it in. Create a short cut to it and drag that to your desk top . Then see if the game will start up with both game options ready.

Hi,

I've installed Comanche to C:\Novalogic\Comanche4. I tried to run the game and it didn't even get off the ground. My mouse cursor turned into the hourglass for a few moments then nothing, it disappeared. I selected task manager to end the process of c4. My version is Comanche 4, V1.00.05; English. I am not going to procedd further until I hear from you.

I have not updated the game yet, so I await your respones. I hope one of you or
all of you can somehow help me get this game running, I want to play it badly and join in and play with you guys over the net.:brutal173.gif:

The newest version of C4 is Ver. 1.0.1.20. I would recomend going to the www.novalogic.com and the to the update section and download the update there. I've had problems at times getting the in game updater to work properly. After installing the update I would get the noCD patch and use it also. See if that works for you.
Unfortunatly the last person that I talked to with a similar problem got his to work after doing a clean install of windows. It's really hard to say why C4 works at times and other times it doesn't. I think this has been a problem with the game from the beginning.
Let us know how it works out for you. Hopefully we can find a solution that works for you.

What is the exact file name of this No CD patch? That would go a long way in helping me avoid any mistakes. I had the update you told me to get from Nova logic downloaded to a patch/update folder I keep for all my games. So all I had to do was click on it and follow the sequence.

What exactly do you mena by a clean install of windows. Does that mean formatting my harddrive and then installing it back on to my computer?

I wonder, could I install two different Os's on to one hard drive? Like Win98 and WinXP, that way I can use Win98 for my older games and WinXP for my newer games.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I'd appreciate any other advice before I try formatting and reinstalling windows.

You can download the noCD patch here. http://www.checkpointdelta.net/cgi-bin/load.cgi?c4fixedkothtkoth.zip. Just replace the original C4.exe with the one from the download. That way you don't need to CD in the drive to play the game. If your having an issue with the game reading the correct drive this should fix it.

And yes a clean install would be reformatting the hard drive. Hopefully that won't be necessary. Also there is no guaranty that it would fix the problems. I've got two PCs here and on one of them I've never been able to get the med editor to work properly no matter how many times I've reformatted. Have the same problems with the med editor for BHD also so it's not just an issue with C4. Most likely a hardware incompatibility that I've yet to figure out.

Problem Solved!!! Its Zonealarm thats the problem.

Let me know if your running zonealarm too.

I had same problem, 2 days of fighting with updates and comanche and figured it out.

I finally installed game without doing updates yet since I thought updates was the problem too.

I installed o/s, then game, game ran, then installed zonealarm before I got my microsoft updates, Game wouldn't run, so uninstalled zonealarm then game ran again.

I installed No CD patch and game is still working fine. Glad my DSL provides free msn/Mcafee firewall, so im using that now and game is still working great. Thanks guys for no cd patch.

Helo Mike,

My ISP is Comcast and they do offer McAfee virus center for free and I do use it! Is Zone alarm part of this package? Could you give me a few more specifics please? If this works I'll be very, very, happy. I've got my fingers crossed. Why does Zone alarm sound so familiar to me?

No Zone Alarm and McAfee are two seperate programs.

Hi,

Now that has happened to me before, McAfee poping up and asking me if I want to let certain programs access the Internet. You think this could also be a problem when trying to play Comanche 4?

I've turned off McAfee but the program still doesn't work. I guess I should try a clean install of Windows XP , in other words, format my harddrive and then install Windows XP. I could be missings some needed files or something that has since been erased. It's been a long time since my last format and some people recommend formatting your HD twice a year or so to get rid of errors in the registry and other places, etc.?
