A fictionalized portrait of Mark "Chopper" Read, Australia's most well-known (and perhaps most beloved) multiple-murderer sociopath, Chopper is more than a portrait of a person who, despite his numerous and objectionable crimes, can wield a charm that takes in fellow inmates and prison guards alike, and is the author of several best-selling books. It's also a critique of the ever-growing cult of criminal celebrity, as we see TV interviewers simper and flirt with a man who is capable of repeated betrayal and homicide. Eric Bana plays the title character with eerie skill, allowing us to experience the violent emotional swings that turn him from a charming conversationalist into a cold-blooded killer.
"Chopper is nothing if not fearless. Mr. Bana is so scarily convincing that he makes you feel the eruptive force of each mood swing and the way his character's paranoia, egomania and conscience"
- Stephen Holden, New York Times
"Three Stars. Chopper is a real piece of work, and so is [Christopher] Bana. Bana's performance makes the character believable--in fact, unforgettable. We feel we're looking at a hard man, not at an actor playing one." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times
I watched this movie at the weekend, i thought it was very good.
And although Mark "Chopper" Read was a nutter he was a very likeable character.
Very good film but i did cringe when he was getting his ears sliced off lol
He now lives on a farm in Tasmania
