When running any game that utilizes network or internet access under Windows XP Service Pack 2,
the Windows Firewall must be configured to allow that game access to the network.

There are several ways to do this.
First, if a program has not been granted access to the network,
Windows will present a dialog box the first time it detects the program trying to establish a connection.

This dialog box states that Windows is blocking the application from making certain network connections.
The options it gives are “Keep Blocking”, “Unblock”, or “Ask me later”.
You should choose the “Unblock” option to allow the game to make network connections.
The problem with this dialog box is that it opens up after the game has been started,
and it will not come to the Windows foreground. This means that you won’t see the dialog box until you exit the game.
If you start a game and are unable to make a network connection, you should exit and look for this dialog box.

Another way to configure the Firewall settings to allow program access is through the “Security Center” control panel.
After opening this control panel, click the link at the bottom to “Manage security settings for: Windows Firewall”.
Click on the “Exceptions” tab on the window that comes up. Click “Add Program…” and browse to find the EXE file for the game you wish to grant network access to.
This will add the game to the list of programs and services.

The other alternative is to disable the Windows Firewall completely.
This is not recommended by NovaLogic or by Microsoft, and should be done only by users that understand the potential security risk associated with doing so.

Yep since service pack 2, am getting slower frame rates and over all the pc is slower. When I drop Joint Operations to the desk top, then enable it again, the screen just hangs, I have sound but the game screen will not come back up.
Glad it's not just me.

You can all thank DEP for that. Since most CPUs don't support it yet, it's all run in software.

Hi, i just moved down to college about a month ago and i cannot connect to novaworld through our network firewall. I emailed the network and found out that the port i need open is actually open (this was originally what we thought was my problem). So is there any way i can route the game through the network firewall? I know its a long shot, but im at a loss and i havent been able to play JO or BHD for a long time. This is a problem when i am a council member of my squad. If anyone could give me some help i would appreciate it.

If the network port is open, Start looking at your machine. Is the xp fire wall on ?, Or do you have a software fire wall that's is not configured right, Do you have a problem with any other programs connecting besides those 2?.

I turned XP's firewall off. I assumed i didnt need it because of the network's firewall/proxy server, so that is not the problem. I do not have any control over the current firewall from my computer. So i'm thinking the only way to route it through the proxy is something within the game. I have no idea how to go about this and im hopping from forum to forum to try and get a clue.

In the game config file there are some places where you can put an ip address and some port changes if that will help
mpipaddressstring = "0.0.0.0"
internet_address = "0.0.0.0"
open the config file and check some of those

Ok im a noob, which configuration file do i open? there is one that says "score configuration settings"...and i know thats not it. There is also a file titled "dfv.cfg"which i thought might be it but my comp cant open it because it doesnt know what program created it. Sorry, im not very computer savvy and i need to take things step by step so i can understand them.

It will say Game CFG for joint Ops, The same file for BHD says dfv CFG. It opens with word pad, Don't know if it will work or not but that's where you can put an ip in and change the ports the games use.
