LAN help please

Yesterday a friend and I tried to set up a LAN to enable us to play head to head on DF2. In short, it failed. I tried to use my PC to act as Player-Server and I was given the error message "Unable to Initiate Provider". I'm very new to the whole LAN thing and wondered if anyone could give me some advice or point out any errors I am making.

When we tried the LAN option for Unreal Tournament it worked fine.

Just noticed that someone had a similar problem and posted it under the Technical thread (where I should have!). The reply was "IPX Protocols" - could anyone expand on this please?
