Problems running C4...please help

Installed C4 on my brother's HP Media Center PC. Had trouble since minute one. First, video wouldn't play, then got the dreaded "no cd" messsage, which I got fixed (many thanks to those in this forum). Now...

Starts game and gets black screen. I can talk him through the screens by using keyboard strokes, and will eventually get to playing the game, which seems to play okay.

Why is C4 giving him black screens / not displaying startup or mission selection screens?

Also, when game does play, screen flickers...but only in standard resolution. If I jack up the res, then plays well...

Downloaded all Windows updates, HP updates and video driver updates...still does this. ATI Raedon 9200 video card, P4 2.8, Win XP Media Edition.

Any suggestions? Thanks much...

I'm not familiar with the black-screen problem. I figure that you have atleast direct X 8 or 9 on the computer since you have the latest updates. I was just wondering if you run direct X diagnostics to see if everything is OK with regards to that (start menu, run, type "dxdiag").

Caveman: Yes, have directx 9.0 installed and seems to be running fine. Combat fligh sim 3 runs well on his machine...

comanche 4 was built around the gforce4 serie's vid card's that require whq or wdhq certified driver's installed cant remember off hand which1 . the vid card your useing is better , is your friend useing a burned back up copy of the c4 c/d ??? or the no c/d patch ??? dose he have all back ground proggy's off ??? like im , icq , stuff like that . also if i remember right the very last update for dflw , tfd , bhd , C4 contained a sniffer for the no c/d patch used by us in the comunity . the sniffer kill's the gm , thus makeing us the player uninstall gm deleate the old gm folder { A MUST BEFORE REINSTAL } and reinstall gm over . then we must come to place's like here @CPD and grab a older update just to play a gm that up until df bhd there was no real support for the N/L game's except for again @ place's like here CPD . i had to uninstal c4 reinstal and use older update still posted here in dnld section just to use the dang editor . why oh because i lost my original still have the box it came in . but my trusty burned backup copy work's just fine , gee glad the music industery cant do the same lmao :smilegrin: . try a hand's on search in the C4 section of the forum im sure some1 else had this or a sim problem

i messed with a couple of hp machines and they had proprietary hardware and drivers. the hardware was slightly modified from the (almost same) off the shelf products. you need to download the hp drivers and try them first (in case that's not what you did). its important that you install the correct motherboard drivers, in fact, you might try installing a previous (older ) version of drivers also, if the current ones don't work. If the video card was part of the bundle, the hp drivers need to be used, otherwise download the radeon drivers off their site. If playing with the drivers doesnt work, go back to what you believe to be the most correct drivers, and fiddle with the bios settings. Try to find the correct bios settings from hp. make sure agp card settings are correct, and try fiddleing with video setttings - ie turn any memory shadowing off, fiddle with spread spectrum, (make sure you write down all the settings first so you can put them back to par in case nothing works). If nothing works, make sure you have run windows update until everything is updated, and if game still doesnt work, try microsoft knowledge base on this problem, or hp support. as a last resort, download the bios flash utility and after following directions (save old bios to floppy disk !!) flash bios (last resort !! - still might not fix it, and if you don't read the directions and know how to re flash it back to original from boot disk, you will have computer that doesnt work at all !!!)) hope this helps
