    C4 and Win XP

    Hi

I have recently upgraded my PC from Win2K SP6 to Win XP pro, SP2, and now I can't get C4 to work anymore.
I just got the busy cursor, it disappears and leaves a c4.exe process behind.
I have all the latest drivers, including firmware for my CD-drive. I have installed C4 on an optional FAT32 formatted D-drive and are runnig the latest version of DirectX (9.0c). I ahve also upgraded C4 with the upgrade found on Novalogic's homepage.
I have read some of the threads on this forum, and I have tried out some of the suggestions, but with no luck.
Does anyone of you guru's have an idea of what I can do to solve this. it's driving me crazy.

    Regards
    Carsten

I want to say that part or all of your problem is that you have C4 on a FAT32 drive. Windows XP is "NTFS". How your able to run two drives under different formats is anyone’s guess. I was under the impression that both drives needed to be formatted NTFS.

I have c4 running on win98,win2k pro, winxp home, and winxp oem, but havent got xp pro. you might try what charger said and install to the native (boot ?) ntfs drive. I do recall that c4 runs a diagnostic program before it will run the c4.exe, so I'm wondering if its the diagnostic crashing or c4 ? are you running the program from a sysadmin status login ? (that may be required, not sure). sorry can't be more help, but if you do reinstall you might want to do a disk scan/defrag just to make sure you didn't just happen to hit a bad sector prior to reinstalling.

More on the subject of C4 running on Win XP. From the start when I go to the multiplayer login page, & all subsequent pages leading to the actual game, I'm only able to see approx. 50% of the page & text, that being the left portion. Theres no way of scrolling over, I'm left to guess whatever may be there, which is what I had to do the first time when I created my account name. The only reason I was able to do this was because my mouse cursor would not click on any links. I finally figured out that I had to tab my way across the pages & keep guessing the various combinations I imagined there could possibly be until I lucked out & hit the rt combo. After finally getting into a game I was really disappointed by the erractic operation of my low budget Logi/Attack 3 js, but concluded that it had to be related to multiplayer setup because it worked perfectly in single player mode as did the rest of the game. I had already run the update from the link within the program, which was only about 400kb. So I decided to go to Novaworld & check for additional updates, now I was really disillusioned. After installing the C4 gen. update, I go to my desktop icon, click it & get the message, "please insert the correct cd disk into the cdrom & restart". For whatever reason, which I've still never found an answer, the game would no longer recognize its own installation cd. I have since found the 20 nocd patch & am running it now but occasionally get an error message on exit of the game saying "sorry for the inconvenience, C4 needs to close at this time", & rare but has twice kicked me to a blank black screen as if my monitor was switched off. The only way to go from there I've found is to restart my machine. Last from in the game some of the HUD map characters are not as described in the manual. The only characters I get on my radar map are different colored rectangles, no specific charaters at all. I'm running Win XP, SP2 on Compaq Presario 6410 with an AMD 2000+ chip, & onboard S3 video. Sorry about the length but I had to vent somewhere cause my wife dose not want to hear anything about "that stupid game that keeps her off the computer so much". Is there anyone with a clue for me because the only thing novalogic was able to tell me after waiting a week for an answer was to completely uninstall the program, delete any leftover files & folders, restart my machine, & try again. Which I did by the way, but still didn't work. Please

Well why we are on the subject I was trying to stick the program on alcohol 120% and the game would not load if the disk was not in, but any how I took the program off alcohol and then the game stop working I have tried both v 1.5 and 2.0 and I still get the same results..... I have tried getting a new startup file and diffrent keyhashes but still nothing...... I have been working on this for a month now and have no answers. I did contact Bane and he had some ideas but it is kind of hard to know what the problem is not being there to see what is happening. Thanks Bane for the help.

I hope someone can figure this problem out.

i might be able to help

Hi guys for some reason if you dont have "c4.cd" file in your C4 folder then you will need the cd in the drive for the game to get the cd information.

The game will work perfectly on single player mode, but you get sys dumps and all sorts of problems in multy player mode if you dont have that file in you C4 folder.

What i have done in the past to help other players (using YIM via voice) is count the ammount of files in my c4 folder and then compare it with the ammount of files with the player who is having problems in his/her C4 folder, and low and behold there is allways one or two files missing!!

I can then send the copies of the missing files using YIM and this sorts out the problem!!

Then all i do is ask the player to right proctect the files so that they never ever get corrupted!!

    I hope this helps

you can manually edit the cd file to tell it which drive is the cd, in case it has put the wrong drive in the file.

also, I think both of the no cd versions are here on CPD, but to install, I think you have to:
    1) reinstall the game from cd
    2) run the game update (you can just run the update program from the game folder (%root%/novalogic/comanche 4) and find update.exe rather than going into the game
    3) then copy the no cd files

    hope that helps
